Can you imagine this for a moment? You took a trip oversees and you are taken captive by a lawless, blood thirsty gang whose intent is to torture you and then kill you. And so, after many days of living in indescribable fear and hopelessness in the hands of this murderous gang, there came a man who gave himself a ransom to take your place, and you are allowed to walk free. How awesome would that be? And how grateful will you be to that man who took your place?
Well, this is what Jesus did over two thousand years ago for all of us! He took our place and instead of us being tortured eternally in hell, He went to the cross carrying all our sins and there He suffered excruciatingly and died for us. Without Jesus’ sacrifice, we could have never been able to do enough good in this lifetime and be able to redeem ourselves from the horrendous amount of debt we owed due to our sins, and from the wrath of God which brings the eternal suffering in hell. But thank God, the Lord Jesus has redeemed by paying with His own blood (“In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace” Ephesians 1:7).
He paid our debt and we were set free. In return, we don’t have to do anything physically to pay Him back. All we have to do is believe in Him and confess Him to other people as it says in Scripture: “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9).
Are you grateful for what Jesus did for you?
